John A. Delaney
President in Residence
State University System of Florida
With the departure of Chancellor Mark Rosenberg in February 2009, the Board of Governors appointed University of North Florida President John A. Delaney as “President in Residence,” to serve until a new chancellor is in place.
As president of the University of North Florida, Delaney oversees a campus of more than 16,500 students, 600 faculty and more than 1,000 staff. The 1,300 acre campus in Northeast Florida is considered a driver in the region, with an annual economic impact of nearly $1 billion. Delaney is a former prosecutor and the former mayor Jacksonville, serving two terms leading the nation’s 13th largest city. He spearheaded major initiatives including The Better Jacksonville Plan, a $2.2 billion improvement plan that gave the city new public facilities and other amenities. He also created the Preservation Project, a massive land conservation program giving Jacksonville the distinction of having the largest urban park system in the United States. Prior to that, Delaney served as the chief assistant state attorney, the number two prosecutor for Northeast Florida and as the general counsel for the City of Jacksonville.
Under Delaney’s direction, UNF reaffirmed its commitment to students, by offering individualized attention and offering transformational learning opportunities. The University of North Florida is also known for its flagship programs, areas where UNF leads the nation. Flagships include Community Nursing, International Business, Transportation and Logistics and Coastal Biology. Delaney’s presidency continues a distinguished career as a public servant.
Delaney remains President of the University of North Florida and will receive no compensation from the Board of Governors in this role, in order to comply with Florida law prohibiting dual office holding.
Former Chancellor Mark Rosenberg announced September 22, 2008 that he would leave the Board of Governors staff to return to the faculty of Florida International University, where he was provost when recruited by the Board of Governors for the chancellor’s post.
