On the site of the abandoned Tamiami Airport in the summer of 1969 the task of building a new university began. FIU held the first commencement in June 1973 in the reading room of the Perry Building - the only place large enough for the ceremony - conferring 191 diplomas. In recent years, enrollment has grown to over 34,000 students. During President Crosby's appointment, the "I" in Florida International became highlighted that prompted the launching of new programs with an international focus.
